Here's one for all you tech heads out there. Having a problem with Iternet / external emai.
1. Email coming in but not going out.
2. Able to ping various IP address but not the domain name and others vice versa.
3. Unable to access various web-sites, including our own service site.

Contacted ISP and they stated nothing had changed.

Next step
- changed the DNS settings on the Novell servers - still didn't work.
- Tcpdump reveals that the Novell server is still using old IP as a DNS server
- Killed dproxy, installed bind on the router.
- Mail now works. Tremendous!

Question:
Is Novell caching the wrong name server address and does it require a reboot?
(likely)
Does Novell have another setting for the name server within the mail system
somewhere (possible?)

Anyone have any ideas on possible cause?

Patsy

One question Patsy - What E-Mail system are you running? If it is GroupWise or NIMS there are problems that can occur within them to cause this same problem.

This is in answer to your question "Does Novell have another setting for the name server within the mail system somewhere (possible?)"

One place that will have a "Nameserver" reference is in a file named "Resolv.cfg". If this file is not setup with the correct information this will cause problems with the delivery of external mail. The file is located on the server that has your Internet Gateway, or Internet Agent. Like in my case I use GW for our e-mail system. The server that runs the GWIA (GroupWise Internet Agent) has the Resolv.cfg file located in Sys:\Etc . The Resolv.cfg file will always be in that . It will have a minimum of two line entries. The first line is your TLD (Top Level Domain)name, the second entry is your primary DNS's IP address. Here is what my Resolv.cfg file looks like (without the right IP #).

domain ips.k12.in.us
nameserver 167.217.1.2

If you have a Secondary DNS Server you could add that as a third line. I hope this helps a little.
