I no nothing about Novell and I have an old database server that I need to connect to that is running netware 3.12. The motherboard went bad in the Novell server so I put the SCSI hard drive and SCSI PCI card in a new box and it booted up just fine to the status moniter. It's plugged into the hub but none of the clients can see it. IPX and client for netware is installed on the workstations I need to connect to Novell. I even downlaoded the client from novell and installed it on a brand new workstation that had never been set-up before without any problems. None of the clients are finding the Novell server. They can all see each other and our windows server so the connections to the workstations are good. How can I ping it if I don't know the IP address? The lights are green on the nic card in the novell server and on the hub so i'm pretty sure I have a connection. Could the nic card in the Novell server be the issue because it's new? Thanks, I am actually the collections manager for a chain of medical offices but they were getting ripped off by an outside IT people so I'm the temporary IT man. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I know nothing about Novell. Anyone know of any Novell experts in the San Antonio, Texas area?

The nerve of this guy calling IT People "rip offs" and yet wants help from this forum made mostly of IT people. Besides these medical people are not so poor ripoffs themselves.
Well, load monitor and go to Lan/Wan and see if your nic has some bound frames. If not then you will have to load the nic driver and bind the approprite frames.

Novell has a pretty good TID on troubleshooting IPX connectivity at the link below. It doesn't appear to require too much previous knowledge....

Sir, You need to learn not to bite that hand that helps you. Who did you think was going to answer your request for help, if not an IT person?

Scott, now you know the reason that you were being 'ripped off'... because you can't do the job yourself... what you said is analagous to me asking for a book on how to perform an angioplasty after a heart attack because 'those doctors are a ripoff'...
bite the bullet and pay for the service you need.

Well, thanks for the info. I was not referring to all people in IT as ripp-offs. let me make myself clear, IT professional are very vital to running a business and it would not be possible without you all. hell, My dad is a CIO for large corporation but he has little knowledge of Novell. But let me tell you of my latest experience. When I came to work for this company we had 20 machines running windows 98 with Office 2000 pro and no office 2000 CD's or liscences and two windows 98' CD's with liscences. I talked to the Clinic Administrator and she showed me an invoice where they had paid to have 20 machines upgraded to 98'SE and to have Office 2000 installed on those same 20 machines. The invoice was for $6,000.00. Well I needed to install windows on a machine because we had an old Celeron 233 crash but I could not find the 98' software or the Office 2000 software. So, I called the company and the guy at the company (thinking I was as ignorant about computers as our Manager)told me that she just paid for the use of the software and that the agreement was that he kept the media. I told him to have me the media and the key codes by that Friday or I would report his company to microsoft. I had the stuff that day. The same comapny also charged our clinic $200.00 to come in and replace a NIC card. he charged two hours of labor. My seven year old could probably change a NIC card in less time than that. I have no porblem paying for professional services but finding people that will actually do it correctly, and in a timely manner is the hard part. This of course is the ase for all professions.

Thanks man, I really think it has to do with the NIC card Frames thinga ma jiggy. No, I did'nt load any drivers for the NIC card in the new system so it probably is still set-up in Novell for the old ISA NIC. How big of a job is this?

Scott,
In all honesty there could be a dozen issues as to why none of the PCs are seeing the server or TREE to be more specific. It could be quite the undertaking for someone with limited "technical savvy" if you will. It could be as simple as you haven't selected the TREE in the client setup using the advanced button on the client logon screen or as complicated as various protocol/connectivity issues. Your best bet is to talk to your colleagues in the business and find someone the use/trust and solicit their help. And while I agree with the above IT professionals like myself, I must say say that good IT people are like good mechanics, when you find one, treat them well and pay them great as the welfare of your business can and generally does lie in their hands. Any way you slice it......good luck
