can't complete 3.12 to 5.1 upgrade

On a same machine upgrade of 3.12 to 5.1 I am running into trouble installing components. Telling me that there are insufficient rights for LDAP services - I get an unsuccessful ligon error. Novell website offers a solution (NOVL6396) but the install won't let me install to a temporary tree after aborting - I keep getting the same container & organizational unit. How do I change if I can't complete any kind of install?
