Here is what I am looking for:
We need the Novell login to come up and for students to be able to do their typical login there. BUT - after that, we do not want to be prompted for the Windows Workstation login. We have created a generic Windows account that we want to login for all students. I have tried TWEAKUI and some other things but nothing works. We are always prompted to enter a Windows workstation login.
Thanks in advance.

If you are using Win2k or XP, you can have two distinct logins using the NetWare client 4.83. Under the "advanced" properties of the client login tab select "windows" login tab, enter in the generic username and that's it. Just make sure there is no password for the generic user, otherwise the user will be prompted.
If you are using Win9x, all I can say is good luck--to my knowledge there is nothing to disable the windows login (I would have suggested tweak UI).

You should probably test these on a workstation to see how your autologin is affected.
On Win 9x workstation:
In the properties of the Novell Client 32 select the Advanced Menu Settings tab. The first choice is cancel desktop login, change the value to "on".
Through administrative install:
If you are using the ACU (Automatic Client Update) this setting can be set in the unattend.txt (using NCIMAN.exe). This is definitely the better solution for a large number of workstations.

Doug/Pat -
Thanks for the suggestions.
I tried setting up a Windows account with no password. The problem is, when I log into Novell, say with a username of student and a password abc123, I then get the message "Log on to Windows". I will have my test account (that has no password). It will also ask me to change the password to sync with my Novell login. If I press enter, I get in fine. However, in our school environment, I need to just bypass this. I want the test account to just login automatically without the user being prompted. Add to that, I would like to know how to remove that "change password" option too.
I guess I should've also noted that I am attempting this in Windows 2000/XP where you must have a windows login.
Our issue is we have 5000 unique student Novell accounts. I need a setup where these students only need to enter their Novell accounts and then be logged onto the Windows workstation automatically (as one generic user). We ghost our machines here and have over 1300 machines. So, I would like to just use a generic windows login, etc.
Thanks for the suggestions....
If anyone has any ideas how to implement this, I would appreciate their knowledge. Just seems funny to me that it is so hard to do (getting a Novell login with a generic and automatic Windows workstation login).
Thanks in advance.

If it's a 9x machine, under client properties, advanced menu, turn on disable windows password cache.
Under XP, we haven't figured that out yet, but if you do, please let me know.

Have you tried this?
Install Novell with client 4.71 or 4.83 not 4.8. Use the custom settings not typical when installing and select Novell WorkStation Manager.
This worked for me!

I also work for a school system and none of these suggestions have worked. But I had a revelation. If you go to start > Run > and type "control userpasswords2," you will be able to set Windows XP to automatically login as any specified workstation user. The problem with this is that it totally bypasses both the Windows and Novell login. So, you can then put Novell Login in the Startup folder! This does not help my problem, unfortunately, because we use Novell Groupwise for e-mail, which also starts a notification service at startup and depends on the authenticated Novell user account. I hope this helps you, though.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It amazes me that doing this is so hard. I would figure someone from Microsoft or Novell would've thought about this.
Anyhow - thanks for the tips. If I figure it out or the suggestions work I will let you know.
Again - thanks.

I've been searching for a way to completely bypass the Windows 2K login as well. We are similar to a school, in that we may have 10 different users, who login to the same computer. We don't use profiles, so I'm wondering what to do, short of entering every user in each computer.
I'm going to try the Novell Client and see if that helps. Please keep posting, if anybody has any ideas.
I still can't believe there isn't a way to completely bypass the Win2K login??
Thanks!!
PatchThis is certainly a pain. Maybe by design?

I was able to get the client login WITHOUT the windows login by making the following Registry keys:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\AutoAdminLogon = 1 (String Value)
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\DefaultPassword = yourpassword (STring value)
HKLM\Software\Novell\Login\AutoAdminQueryNDS = 1 (DWORD)

The posting by Adam Blaschke on June 07, 2002 at 11:56:50 Pacific, worked a treat. My system was win2000 with Novell 4.8
Thanks!

I saw that post by Adam Blashke, and while it looks promising, it looks like it auto logs in with the admin account, giving the users way more privilages then we're like them to have. We are having the same problem, and we're maybe looking at using Novell login extentions or some other type of after login programing to login to a dummy account on our XP boxes. Am I right in thinking that this is auto-loging into a admin account?

I'm trying to do this same thing with the client 4.83 and XP. If there has been any success without having to log in as Adminstrator, (i.e.: login to NDS with a trivial username, but always login to XP as the same non-admin-status user), please post the solution.
We are not using ZENworks in our environment, so Workstation Management is not an option.
Any advice would be welcome.

I tried editing the registry like Adam Blaschke said to. When I restart the computer the first time it works fine but the next time I restart it goes back to the default (AutoAdminLogon = 0) and the Windows Login screen comes up. Is there some way to save what I change in the registry? I was under the impression that it automatically saved when you exited the registry.

I fixed my own problem. I was adding DefaultPassword but I didn't want a password for the user so I left the string field blank. Can't do this...there has to be a password for the user.

I have try the same thing. It works fine and perfect for starting up the workstation. But before I install the Novell Client32 I uncheck the Microsoft Novell Client. While in the Registry :[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DefaultUserName"="xxxxxx"
"DefaultPassword"="xxxxxxxx"
"DontDisplayLastUserName"="0"
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"included the line in:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon]
"NetWareUsername"="bgpubp2"check inside :
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Novell\Location Profiles\Services\{1E6CEEA1-FB73-11CF-BD76-00001B27DA23}\Default]
Also check the user password and autologon setting:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Novell\Login]
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"
"DefaultLocationProfile"="Default"
"DefaultPassword"="xxxxxx"I check for the above and also we run the PCRDIST for the image incase of stdent changeing it. and mark those userid and password and dontshow for ignor. It works perfect each time it restart or reboot or after running the PCRDIST.
Regards

I made the user administrator with no password. Then went into Tweak UI and set the logon tab to autologon Administrator with no password and it worked. Zenworks took care of policies. We run Windows 2000 and Novell 4.83.

I followed the three reg key idea and then added a password for the user who was logging in and it is work perfectly except for one pretty major detail. We like to have our users just logoff not shutdown the machine and it works fine if I restart or shutdown but if I just logoff the second window appears when I go to log back in. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks Sarah

To be able to log off...
add the following key...
\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ForceAutoLogon=1for complete directions please see my last post! hope this helps! I myself am having trouble, we use norton ghost to image our machines and we must change the hostnames for them once they have been ghosted...but i find when i change it and reboot it breaks the novell client and i cannot login...instead i get "cannot login to the specified domain, domain cannot be found" and it hangs....

Adam thanks for the idea. It doesn't seem to want to work for me with either the ctr + alt + del logoff or the start - shutdown - logoff. JD on a newer post says he used the key and it worked with a ctr + alt + del logoff but not one through the start menu. I will continue to search though. I hope you can figure out your ghosting problem.
Thanks for all your help.
Sarah

Sorry if this is repeat doesn't seem to want to show up. Figured out my own problem. Clients 4.80 SP3 and 4.81 do not reconize that key. You have to get the patch. More info can be found at novells site with the search of windows 2000 logon.
Sarah

Just wondering if anyone figured this out... we are working at a school, too, and we have the SAME problem!
