I'm not sure if this is a configuration problem, or simply how it works?
We have windows 2000 Pro machines dialling up via ordinary modem to our network. Once connected we use Novell client (4.83SP1 - IP only) to log into Netware and map drives to the netware volumes. The whole process is very slow, for example, here's the timings to get into a particular folder:1. [Dial-up to RAS using standard Dial-up networking in Windows 2000] - 40kbps connection
2. Choose login on Novell client - full login to end of login script (maps 7 drives ) takes 1 min 40 secs
3. Double click My-Computer
4. Double click K: drive - takes 17 seconds to show 1 object !
5. Double click on Folder - takes 55 seconds to show 108 objects
6 Double click on Folder - takes 45 seconds to show 8 objects
During steps 4 - 6 the RAS connection only sends 34,919 bytes and receives 51,270Opening or copying Office documents and spreadsheets takes minutes !!
I have been advised by one "Novell expert" that "ours works like that too"
Is this the case?
I've tried most of the suggestions in www.ithowto.com/novell/clientspeed.htm without any real improvementsI have tried using the same machine to dial-up and and access an NT share on a different network and the performance is MUCH better (although the modem speed was about half that of the Novell test), here's my timings for this:
1. [Dial-up to RAS using standard Dial-up networking in Windows 2000] - 21.6kbps connection (server located in a barn conversion!)
[net use g: \\server\share to map the drive]
2. Don't need to login to Novell
3. Double click My-Computer
4. Double click G: drive - takes 5 seconds to show 43 objects
5. Double click on Folder - takes 2 seconds to show 34 objects
6. Double click on Folder - takes 2 seconds to show 26 objects
Opening a reasonable size (100k) Excel spreadsheet takes less than 1 minute.Paul
