I am a running Netware 4.11 server, with 11 Windows 9x workstations. I setup a print server on the server. I have a question about the setup, I have the print server, the printer objects, and printer queues for each printer. I am unsure about how to setup the ports for the workstations. Do I capture the printer port through the Novell client, and if so which LPT port do I select for each workstation. I just went to the printer detail for each printer on each client and set each one to print to the print queue on the server. What is the best way to capture the printer port for each workstion? I the printers are attached to the workstations, so I have Pserver running on the console and Nprinter running at the workstations that have printers attached.
Hi, Capturing printer ports (redirecting local LPT ports to the Novell printserver) is required when you are using MSDOS based programs. Users using Windows applications like Word/Excel, can print to the printserver (if the printers are setup on the workstation). If you have to capture, do it through the Novell client. Regards, Rob

I strongly recommend just mapping to the printer from within windows unless there are specific reasons you need to capture such as a DOS program that needs printer access etc.. The reason being is that if a local printer was added later etc... and the printer is just mapped through Windows, the user would be able to use both at will. If you use capture, that would be the only printer they could print to.
Even if there are no local printers at present it (in my mind) would be better to map them versus capture them in case of expansion later.

Summary: I'm not familiar with W2K but with 9X it is not necessary to capture the port. That is done when the printer is setup. Be sure that your printer object is configured as local to the server and not rem...
