Does anyone know if you need both ArcServe for Netware and the Client for Netware loaded on the Netware server in order to backup and restore from/to it? I just started working at a new job and look at that server died, lost two drives from raid controller. Anyway the person that set up backup system is no longer here. We have an NT server with ArcServeIT 6.61 Advanced Edition running on it. The administrator above me has no clue what was running on the Novell server. I have looked thru the user guides and online help but no luck. I loaded the agent on the novell server but every time I try to connect to the agent I get message failed to login to Directory Services. I am using the top level novell admin username and password....Any help/suggestions would be great, thanks

You do not need the NW client loaded on the Server you use for backing up Remote Servers. Here is a list of the bare minimum "ArcServe" NLM's you need loaded on the Server that is doing the backups and has the Changer(s) and Tape Drives hooked up to it. The other list is for the bare minimum "ArcServe" NLM's that you will need on the Servers you will be backing up (Remote Servers).

BACKUP SERVER
TSA500.nlm
OFA.nlm (used for backing up Open Files)
NWASPI.cdm (see note below)

REMOTE SERVERS
TSA500.nlm (this is used for connection)

It goes without saying that you load the ArcServe software onto the BACKUP SERVER. When you start ArcServe on the BACKUP SERVER (astart6) watch the monitor closely. ArcServe will go through what is called a PreFlight check. The PreFlight check checks the "Netware" NLM's that are needed for the correct version level, and also just to see if they are present. If all goes well with the PreFlight check, I beleive the last thing on the screen you will see is the loading of the Tape Drives and the Changer(s). If an error occurs during the PreFlight check make a note of the error description and number. The error number will be in the format of "Exxxx". Where the x's are numeric. Hope this helped you a little more than before you read it.

Note: NWASPI.CDM is a NetWare Peripheral Architecture (NWPA) driver written as
a Custom Device Module (CDM) that allows applications that use the ASPI
interface to access devices, to do the same on a NetWare server. Since I do not know what type of backup devices you are using, I am putting this in as an example. This is the CDM that we use for our HP Changers.

If you have problems restoring/recovering the data then try www.computer-recovery.com they may be able to help, either or at least conversion to CD or something.
