Although I've been around both Windows and Macintosh for years, this fall is my first brush with Netware at the server level. I need to add a user account to a Netware 6 server. How do I do that?

Well Ed, this is the method to do it ... there are 2 GUI tools that accomplish this, I will tell you one, using NWadmin32 that is installed in your Client Workstation:
Log in as an Administrator or as a User with the sufficient rights to create an account, after authentication, navigate the NDS tree that represent your organization structure, and find the container where you want to create this new user account ... namely, your Organization name is ACME, and inside this ACME Organization is the ACCOUNTING subdirectory and here is where you want to create the account ... highlight this ACCOUNTING subdirectory (click on it), and once highlighted press the INSERT key in your keyboard, a menu will open ... click CREATE, and a menu will open ... Scroll the list of objects that can be created and at the last three choices you will find USER, click on it ... a property sheet will open giving you the chance to fill all the properties for this new user ... for example, login script, effective rights to the Tree, Group that this user could belong to, password restrictions ... you get the idea ... this is plenty of work that only the Admin should attempt, because just creating a user in the NDS structure is just the tip of the iceberg ... you have to assign rights to this new user ... you have to create Search Maps Drives for his account ... Login parameters ... Workstation restrictions ... Profile, Group, Role ... plenty of work, so you should plan carefully before doing this ... Other than that, YOU ARE THE MAN !! like a pal of mine always says.
At the beginning I said that there are 2 GUI tools, the other one is ConsoleOne.
Hope you find this useful.

I can add only one thing to saint's very good outline of adding a user to your Organization. Take time and create a template for users. You can find the simple instructions for creating a template in novell's knowledge base: http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp
The template will take care of a great majority of rights, groups belonging to, logon restrictions, and on and on. This way you create the user, associate the user with the template (done @ the time the user is created). It is WELL worth the time to learn about templates. It can literally save you hours of time, depending on how many users you are creating.
