Hello I need help adding a T1 line to a novell server the server is running 4.11 and has 5 work stations. could someone give me a step by step or point me in the right direction its been about 6 years since i used novell so i'm very rusty. the T1 peeople are coming tomorrow and I just want to be ready I'm assuming that they are going to have a router for me to use so that is what i'll need to attach to the server I could be wrong. also all clients are running windows 98.
thanks in advance

We currently have 2 T1's and the version of Novell was not really the issues for us. In my opinion, it's far more important to make decisions on the following:

(1) What kind of firewall are we going to use if any? (strongly reccomend that you do use one)

(2) How many IP numbers is the ISP going to give you?

(3) Are we going to use static ip address on the workstations or a DHCP server?

(4) Do all 5 people or workstations need to be on the net?

(5) Make sure the ISP is providing DNS for you and that he will make timely DNS entries for you if you are running your own, WEB, FTP or MAIL servers internally.

As far as which router to use, hopefully the ISP will provide you with one as well as the proper CSU/DSU, but this is usually setteled or arranged within the contract between you and the ISP.

The windows 98 stations will need to have tcp/ip installed and configured. Once you determined how IP numbers are to be handled, (static or via DHCP), on the workstation the only other things that you need to know for the workstations are the primary and secondary IP numbers for the DNS servers as well as the default gateway, (this will be the router ip number). Oh, and what subnet mask you are using.

On the server you will have to load tcp.nlm as well as the NIC driver again and bind ethernet_ii to the NIC card. I can provide examples or the WEB is full of them if you need. There are a few other tweeks, but I don't think that you will need these for 5 users.

I hope this helps a little.

Question I have to ask is what is the T1 for? Internet access?? Bit of OVERKILL for 5 workstataions and considering the cost DSL would be a lot cheaper [at least in my neck of the woods]

Unless there is a reason for the server to accessing the internet I WOULD NOT BIND IP to the Server NIC. Yes have a firewall and antivirus if connecting to the internet. But why put your server on the net if no need?

You can configure the workstations to get DNS, etc from the ISP so you don't need any of that on the server. Makes it much harder for a hacker to get to your server.
