Comment:

Please point me in the right direction how to add additional drives to my Netware 6.5 sp5 server. We have a small (14 bays) HP StorageWork connected via SCSI adapter to the main server. I would like to add more space to the volumes.

Compaq DL 380 G2

Thanks

okay just some pointers...

CONCEPTUAL:

1. NSS storage and pools

Since Netware 5 (1998), the preferred hard drive format has been NSS, which makes use of pools. A "pool" is a collection of (Netware)partitions on hard drives. As far as I know the main reason for this was to ease difficulties in resizing volumes when they ran out of space. You can add space to a pool easily.

2. overbooked volumes.

Normally you have several volumes in a pool. But you don't have to specify what size each volume is. Each volume can take as much of the pool as it needs - first come, first served.

3. iManager

as you are probably aware, Netware engineers favor web browser management nowadays. The easiest way to configure storage in NW6.5 is with Internet Explorer and iManager. (Basically a few webpages on your server)

PRACTICAL

1. add new hard drive

2. Use Internet Explorer to get to your server. (you can do this from anywhere in the world, in theory, but it's much faster to do it from within your LAN)

2. Open up iManager.

3. Go to Storage (on left frame). Scan for devices or go to Devices > Initialize disk.

4. In Volumes> <your volume which you want to increase> properties, make sure that you have ticked "Allow volume quota to grow to pool size."

5. Go to Pools, select a pool which holds your volume, and "increase size."

6. with overbooking in place, your volume will just accept the new size on offer behind the scenes. maybe a dismount and mount wouldn't hurt.

7. for further info, check Netware 6.5 documentation. http://www.novell.com/documentation/nw65/
