xServe backup options

I'm after some backup software for a Mac xServe, but the only options I can see cost hundreds of dollars. The network I run is only very small and these solutions seem excessive. A possible solution seems to be FWB Backup. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Retrospect is your best bet. If you can afford an XServe, you can afford Retrospect.

All we have is a 20 machine peer to peer network with the xServe as a file, mail and proxy server. Retrospect does seem like a good program, but the only backing up we'll be doing is files on the xServe, not on the client machines. To backup the xServe would mean buying Retrospect workgroup, which at $500 seems to be a bit expensive for the very small number of tasks we need from it.

For the time being we are using an 18gb external drive on the network, but my problem is finding software that will perform automatic backups on Server x that doesn't cost $100's. Until I arrived backups weren't even thought about(!) and I'm not sure the boss will remember to run a manual backup every week, let alone day!

Just let it alone and the first time the boss loses data from a crash, you'll have your $500 for Restrospect.
Tell him it's like a one-time $500 insurance policy against ever losing data. Ask him what's worth more: his data or your time to reconstruct things as best as they can be reconstructed in the case of a crash.
