I have got a couple of unlocked 8gb xbox harddrives is it possible to install them in the imac, as the existing hd is only 4gb, and these will double the amount of space available. will it work? do i have to format them a special way before putting them in, or will the os install disks be able to format them correctly

If ther are "normal" drives, which I think they are, then just use OSX or OS 9's Disk Utility, format, if installing 10.3-10.4, make sure you use HFS + Exteneded Journaled, otherwise HFS or HFS+ is fine. In therory it should work. Check drive manufacturers site to be sure they are jumpered as master and not slave or cable select. (Although you may get away with cable select, Master is safer)
