Word 2001 on Mac 9.1

I've had Word 2001 installed on my G3 beige desktop for a while now, and suddenly it's decided it can't read any of the Word documents I've created on it. If I create a new doc, save it and try to open it later, it won't recognize it. I can't open any Word files, including those created on another computer--even thought the Mac displays MS Word icon. (I've made sure files I save are being saved as Word docs.)
Any advice? Any known viruses? I've reinstalled MS Office, but to no avail.
