Hi

Can airport equipped macs connect to a non apple wireless access point, or would they only communicate with a airport base station?

You're in luck. My home wireless setup uses a NETGEAR MR314 wireless router. It's cross-platform,with easy on-line configuration and settings. Modem & router plug into my Win98 PC...and it works great sending the signal just about anywhere in the house to my airport-equipped G3 iBOOK & iMAC. Here's an older product review. This particular model may have been replaced by updated hardwarwe, but you'll get the idea....

I'm sure other products would work fine, but this has been my personal experience. Hope it helps.

Yea, it shouldn't be a problem... I have 3 PCs wired
and 2 Macs wireless running thru a Netgear MR314.
No problem, piece of cake.

And I definately recommmend the Netgear over a
linksys... I took my linksys wireless router back after
a few weeks because the signal would always drop
during downloads and the wireless signal would
always drop after a few of inactivity... go netgear.
