You can also look on the Support Page at Apple.com and look at the specs of your model.

Why would you want too? Mac OS 8.X and even 9.X is superiour to OS X in almost everyway. If it wasnt they still would be writing software for it! In fact Mac OS 8.6 is the last version I will ever run.

Meant to say that most the software today is still written native to macOS 8.x and 9.x.
Sorry.

Any G3-based Mac should be able to run OSX. We moved from OS9 to OSX on our G3-400 iMacDV about 18 months ago. Its been great. Much more stable than OS9 and my kids download all kinds of junk. Installed Panther a couple of weeks ago... awsome. The only cool thing it won't do is the "cube rotation" when using the fast user switching. This is due to the video processor not being able to handle Quartz Extreme.
Recommendations: As much RAM as possible. Check Crucial's configurator for the maximum RAM for your system. I run 348, but on a 233MHz system, I'd go for the max. Hard drive: Dump the 4GB that came with the Bondi iMac for a 40, 80, or higher hard drive. I picked up a 100GB IBM at Fry's for about $100 when we installed Jaguar. Used the 13GB that came with our iMac in an external enclosure for backup, etc. After that, you may want to look at a processor upgrade like the Harmoni-series from Sonnet. Kinda expensive compared to buying another used, more modern iMac, though. The Harmoni bumps you up to 600MHz and adds Firewire.
Summary: Out of interest, how did you get 576MB? I have the same iMac (DV, G3 400) and it will only take 512MB (2 x 256MB). If there's a way to install more I'd like to hear about it. ...
Summary: what the system preferences say is right. By the way 256 will hardly run OSX - 512 is really the minimum but if you want to be safe for the years to come take 1024. schnub...
