Recently upgraded to Mac OS 8 (maybe OS 8.1???) and Worldnet/Netscape 4.5. I use Power Mac 6320CD and Personal LaserWriter 300. When I try to print web pages, the image prints about 2 in. x 3 in. at one corner of the paper. Doesn't seem to do this in other situations (email, Word 6 documents, etc.). There's gotta be some configuration detail somewhere which I haven't found yet. Can anyone help? Thanks. Drew

I just picked up a new iMac, and I've noticed
the same thing with Netscape Communicator;
Internet Explorer seems to work fine. A
temporary workaround seems to be to increase
the printed page size using the Page Setup
command in Netscape (I set it to 200%, and
the print out enlarged, but was still smaller
than it should be), but this really isn't
satisfactory. Anybo

Make sure the 'fit to page if possible' box is UNchecked in your page setup.

BE SURE THAT COMMUNICATOR IS NOT RUNNING BEFORE EDITING THE FILE
LISTED BELOW!!!!

In your System Folder, in your Preferences Folder, in you Netscape Users Folder...

Open the folder of the User's Name that you use to launch Communicator.

Inside this Folder, you will see a file named: liprefs.js

Make a copy of this file (Command D = DUPLICATE) to retain an original version in
case something goes wrong. *Remember that this ORIGINAL file will now have the
word 'copy' added to the end of the filename. If you should need to use this file again,
you will need to make sure that the file ends with the original letters ' js '.

At this point you will need to launch a text editor. SimpleText is recommended. DO
NOT use a word processor as these apps add extra data to documents. (DO NOT
USE--> Microsoft Word, Office, AppleWorks, etc.)

From the text editor application, OPEN the file: liprefs.js (Don't double click the file to
open it.)

You should see many lines of data detailing your Preferences for Communicator.

Check to see if the following line is listed anywhere in the data:
user_pref("browser.mac.print_fit_to_page", false);

If the line is present, but the word 'true' is there as opposed to 'false', type in the word
'false'.

If this line is not present at all, you will need to either COPY/PASTE this line into the
file EXACTLY as I have shown above or type this line in EXACTLY as I have shown
above.
*If mistype this line in ANYWAY, Communicator will not operate correctly!!! After you
type the line, review the line above carefully I'm not sure if the line of data must be at a specific location in this file. Just to be safe,
place the line of code soon after:

user_pref("browser.chrome.toolbar_style", 1);

*If you don't see this line of code, just be sure that the line referring to the 'fit page'
data is about four lines into the data.

*A tip: After you've inserted the new line of code, the syntax should appear extremely
similar to the other lines of code. (ie: ends with a semicolon, quotes, etc.)

After editing is complete, (from SimpleText) SAVE the file. You've now updated your
Preferences. (*If you are using BBEdit, you should SAVE the file as a Generic Text
File.)

Boot up Communicator. Find a page to print. See if it works. If it works, great! If not,
you may have been working with the wrong User's Preferences. Be sure that you are
starting Communicator using the corresponding User's name to the liprefs.js file.

If you've booted Communicator but it's crashing or you're having problems with it:

1) QUIT Communicator
2) Find the liprefs.js file that you edited
3) Drag this file to the trash (Don't empty the Trash yet.)
4) Remove the word COPY from the end of the liprefs.js file. (* There may be a 'space'
left after the letters 'js'. Be sure that the filename ends with only the letters js .
5) Boot up Communicator
6) At this point, you should be back to where you started before you ever read this
post!

If not, you have another Communicator problem or you are not booting up the correct
User's name for Communicator.

EARL,

You are quite knowledgeable, but you gotta be kidding? Right? Things aren't so bad that we must resort to the pocket-protector grade geekdom that you describe.

Earl,
I agree with nedflanders. You are obviously knowledegable, but I think your solution to be a bit extreme for the task at hand. How about a fix that's a bit more conventionally adaptable to normal people who are just 'using thier mac' to do stuff? I have no concrete advice to offer as to the fix. I'm in the printing industry and seem to think it's just a 'page setup' or 'print' setting that's amiss.
