Comment:

I dug out an old Apple Macintosh Classic II from the loft and when it powers up it just has black and white vertical stripes on the screen and makes no sounds. I'm aware this is some kind of problem which means the computer has to be opened up, but I don't have the technical ability to do so, even if I did I wouldn't actually know what is what or what needed doing (!) do you think there is any where that still actually does repairs on these things!? Or is it a finding 'a friend of a friend' kind of situation...

You just get vertical lines? You get no happy mac chime, or sad mac face?

Could be anything. Could be something on the monitor, could be the logicboard. The first thing you will need is a mac-cracker. It is a really long torx screwdriver for opening up those macs. Once inside everything is pretty obvious where it goes.

From memory, and it was a long time ago, this is normally an indication of problems with the analogue board which sits vertically up the side of the Mac and controls the display.

Unless you can find a replacement or someone who can solder, there's not much hope. Be careful opening up these old Classic Macs as the voltages inside can be dangerous.
