I work in a small edit shop and we are currently looking to get a new G4 for both linear and non linear video editing. My question: What software is out there for these applications? Being able to do both linear & non-linear is extremely important, since only that way could we justify the cost of a complete new system.

There is the most obvious, Adobe premeir, but their arte several choices depending on what your outcome is to be. With Premeir you would have to purchase After effects as well for compositing, But both can be done with Apples new FinalCut software. For low end editing, you can use Quickeditor. Available for download at almost any location. Very low in power, and very limiting but excellent for quick jobs. Also check out iMovie for low end and Avid. But for now, the tool of choice for proffesionals remains Premeir and After Effects
