Hi,

I don't know alot about MAC and the only utility I know to repair disk problems is Disk first aid. Is there another utility that I could download from the Internet for free (which URL?...maybe from download.com). Disk First aid gives me a "Test done. Problems were found, but Disk First Aid cannot repair them". One time out of two, when I try to copy a file, it gives me a -127 error and the system crash alot.

The system is a PowerBook 3400C with OS 7.6.1. I tried to updated it to 8 and 8.5 but in the installation, it tells me that "Problems were found with "Macintosh HD" that cannot be fixed by this program. See your installation manual for instructions.". I was able to install OS 8 but alot of steps were skipped... so it gave me a very unstable computer

thanks in advanceà

Mathieu

Either Norton Utilities from Symantec (www.symantec.com) or TechTool Pro from Micromat (www.micromat.com) should do the trick.

Sounds like Re-initializing the drive is what you need to do. Apples DriveSetup (Free. Find it on your install CD.) will do that. You will have to re-install the O/S and apps. Backup all your data beforehand.

thanks for answering my question...

For some of the program, I don't have the cd... can I copy the executable, preferences and extensions out of the system folder and copy them after re-initialization.

That will work for some programs; just make sure you copy *all* of the components.
Some copy-protection schemes prohibit this, so you may have to reauthorize programs after copying them :(

Norton Utilities from Symantec
or
TechTool Pro from Micromat ?
I guess that is my question.
My experience with Norton is that it gets too far into the computer for its and the users own good... but maybe a Mac is different.
Ive had some problems with Symantec too, but thats another story.
Thanks for your help.
