can anyone tell me why one of the macs
at my work wont give me the option to
open .err files from our mac server using simpletext

all the other macs ask the user to choose
an application to open the file, they
choose simpletext and it opens fine

i tried running simpletext then browsed to the file on the server and it opened fine, but there must be a reason why simpletext is not provided as one of the applications to open the file when it asks me which program to use to view the file

the mac that wont give the option to use
simpletext has the application in 3
locations:

apple menu items
photoshop 5.5
illustrator 8.0

some replys to a similar question i
posted told me to download some free
software, there was be something wrong
with this mac because all the other macs
work fine so if you know why this is
please let me know

thanks

The Macs that are giving the user an
option to select an application to open the
document, when you double-click on the
document's icon, are probably running
MacLinkPlus (a control panel, extension,
and some support files, mainly in a folder
named "Dataviz" in the System
Folder)--it's the only utility on the Mac that I
know of, that will do this. The reason
MacLink is doing this, is probably
because the file you're trying to open has
a Type code of "TEXT", but a Creator code
for some application that's not installed
on these Macs' hard drives.

I correct myself: the "File Exchange"
control panel will also do what you're
describing. It sometimes works in
conjunction with MacLinkPlus. Open the
File Exchange control panel and play with
its settings; you may have to add a new
definition, telling it to open .err files with
Simpletext. Sorry, I don't know the exact
steps to do this, but give it a try.

an excellent response from jonsaw making this a simple problem to solve

anyone experiencing this problem should goto the file exchange control panel and configure as appropriate

thanks :o)

Somebody ought to alert the moderator of
