Dear Sir/Madam:

I have just received an HP ScanJet4p for free and am having problems with it. All the cables are connected and my G5 Macintosh, version OS 10.3 does not want to recognize it.

I have tried to find the right software to make it work on my Mac.

What do you suggest?

Thank you.

Wow! The 4p is a very old scanner (1996 or so) ..SCSI, i believe.( i assume therefore you're using a scsi card) .at least I have a 5p that is scsi, and the newest drivers i could find for it were MacOS 7x drivers..
If you don't have the right drivers installed, the mac won't recognize the scanner, which is why you can't see it in OSX.
You might have luck with something called Vuescan, which is a third party scanner application that supports all sorts of older scanners, and I believe has MacOSX support.
I don't know offhand where to find it, but i'm sure google will turn up lots on vuescan...
