I've just bought my first MAc - an imac - and am
having a problem saving to a zip drive I installed. My
Pc addled brain is used to seeing a,c,d etc as drives
but when I go to save anything I can't seem to find
the zip disc to save to!

I have the Iomega 250 USB zip and when I insert a
disc I get the icon on my desktop and can open the
files OK but can't find it in the save menu when
trying to save music sample sor even an Appleworks
doc.

I know this must be simple but.........

Any help greatly appreciated,,
Thanks
Simon

This is a quickie and I will get back to you (if
noone else does):

Just find the document you want to back up - eg:
an MP3 or AppleWorks doco - and physically drag
and drop its icon over the Zip Disk's icon. It will
drop in and Copy instantly.

back to you soon

cheers

Thanks Clockwork,

Surely that means I have to save it to a folder though and then drag it to the Zip? That seems like a lot of double work! Is there is no way to save directly to the Zip from a program, just like saving to a floppy on a PC?

Thanks again,

Geoff

Of course, in the save dialog box, as long as the ZIP Disk is in, you pull down the menu that has the location name (IE. Macintosh HD) and it should be listed there named whatever you named it, default for a zip is usualy something like "ZIP 100" or "ZIP 250". Let us know if that helped, or if you still can not find it. If you are still having problems, list the MacOS version number and the ZIP drive model if other than Iomega.

Response 2 is also correct - yet without detail -
though I answered your query in 2 minutes as I
only had 2 minutes hence the term : "This is a
quickie..."

Yet there are many ways to skin a cat (or peel an
Apple). A file does not need to be wrapped up in a
Folder in order to be physically dragged out of a
Folder and onto the Zip Disk - and yes - there are
no Directories - just as your mind has no
Directories - it is a gestault system - there is no E:/
Directory for the Zip as it will just appear on your
Desktop - as will a Floppy Disk or a CD - or your
Hard Drive (your HD) - first icon in top right of your
screen - which is the equivalent of your C:/ drive.

So - let's say we are in MS Word, we have written
a letter, there is a Zip Disk in the Zip Drive - and
we wish to Save it straight from MS Word into our
Zip Disk:

1. In MS Word (or AppleWorks or which ever
Application you are using) - go up to the top
menu: "File" >> scroll down to "Save As..." >> in
the Save As dialogue box you will see 3
selections -

Save As: Name.doc
Format: Microsoft Word Document
Where: - now here you have the option to change
the destination! If "Where" does not say "Desktop"
- like if it says "Home" or "Documents" - click on
that pop-open menu and scroll to "Desktop".

Now - next to "Where: Desktop" - you will see a
glassy blue square with an arrow in it. If the arrow
is pointing 'down' - click on it to make it point 'up'
and two lists should appear below it.

The right hand list will show you what is on your
Desktop - so scroll down and look for your Zip
Disk. When you find it - double click on its icon in
the list and click once on the blue glassy "Save"
button. Your document will be saved straight to
your Zip Disk.

Note: If you cannot see your Zip Disk in the
Desktop list, just click once on the blue glassy
Save button and your document will be Saved
straight onto the Desktop.

Later on - you will see it sitting on your Desktop.
Click down on it and drag it and drop it over your
Zip Disk icon. It will copy across instantly.

To eject your Zip Disk, drag it down to the Trash in
your Dock - though your Trash can may now have
taken on the appearance od a silver Ejection icon.

It is all a matter of gradually becoming used to a
method. We Mac users also found Apple's OS X
system v. difficult to use @ first (still do) - because
it is so unlike anything we'd ever seen before, yet
in time it will just become another Operating
System and it will natural evolve and improve.

Best advice: Play!

=)

Thanks all!

I popped home at lunchtime and have managed to successfully save direct to Zip - hurrah!!

I think I just wasn't used to the interface and ur guidance has helped. Glad I'm not the only one who had a hard time getting used to it. I have to admit, I love the look of OSX and after a couple of weeks use, its beginning to make sense.

Thanks again,

Geoff
