Comment:

I recently purchased a USB to parallel
printer cable to connect my LaserWriter
Select 360 to my iMac, using the
LaserWriter's parallel port and one of the
iMac's USB ports. No Mac drivers were
provided for the cable on the CD which came
with it, so I presumed the cable was "plug
and play" with Macs, since it says it is Mac
compatible.

However, once everything was plugged in and
switched on, I tried to locate the printer
in the Chooser. When I select "LaserWriter
8", my printer does not show up on the
right hand side of the Chooser. I am using Mac OS 9.1, so the LaserWriter 8 driver is a recent version. I have tried
other ways of locating it, but have had no
success. I have set the printer to mode 6
which should allow parallel Postscript
printing.

I checked for the cable in Apple System
Profiler, and it shows up as a USB device,
so it is obviously connected correctly.

Is there any way of solving this problem? I
tried contacting the company that I bought
the cable from, but it didn't really help. What I
really need is a USB to parallel driver ( for Mac OS 9) that
will allow me to use the LaserWriter through
USB.

Any help would be much appreciated.

you may have to use usb to apple talk adapter and use the apple talk port on the printer instead, or you may have to setup the printer to use the parallel port instead of the apple talk port, I believe that it has a switch on the back of the printer for set up, read the printer manual.

this scenario seems to be very OS, cable brand and
printer brand/model specific!
