USB hub won't work

Hi. I have bought a 4 port USB hub which says it will work fine on OSX. It didn't come with any software. When I connect it to the back of my iMac, the hub's In Use light comes on. Then I experimented by connecting my printer to the hub, but there is no through connection. When I try to print I get a message which says: Opening Printer Connection Failed: Unable to open the printer connection. Please check your printer connections. Anyone got any ideas?
