Urgent Help Needed???

I am having a bad problem. When I try to connect to the internet on my mac performa 578 it says an error occured while initializing the serial port. The modem is a us robotics 33.6 mac modem and the performa 578 is a 66mhz and with 36mb of ram. Should i get a whole new mac or just fix it because the rest of it works like new.
