I want to replace Mac OS 7.5.5 to Mac OS 8. I want to know if is possible to replace the old system files with the Mac OS 8 system files. I have 2 computers,G3 Mac OS 8 and PowerPC Performa 6400.I no longer have the Mac OS 8 cd.However,I can burn a copy of the Hard Drive on a cd.

Not gonna work; there are too many machine-specific files for the OS to work properly on a Mac that's so different from the one it was originally installed on.

I actually did that once from a Powerbook G3 to a Performa 6200 and it worked fine. Took forever to copy everything across though as there was no network card on the performa, just had to link it to the printer port.....but it worked.

If you want OS 8.1 on the 6400 You might get lucky on e-bay or build your own OS 8.1 Boot CD once you have the "Disk Copy media" Binary compressed files downloaded from Apple's Support archives. You might even be able to purchase one from Apple its a great investment
I Have a copy and its got "Data Viz's MAC Link" and Apple Phone Media/Fax software FREE onboard the disk
Once you have a partition "working" with a bootable system then burn it to a "bootable enabled CD" via toast... Then you will have a compleat working Back up you can even use to boot with in times of trouble...whew!
