I have a 300mhz blueberry ibook with 32mb RAM and currenty running OS 8.6. I'm going to purchase 512mb RAM and want to upgrade to one of the OS X 10. versions. What I want to know is, can I just buy, say, OS X 10.1 and install it from 8.6, or do I need to have one of the 9. versions installed first and then install OS X?

For 10.3 Panther (and all previous versions, I think) you must have at least OS 9.1. Early copies of OS X (Including 10.1) included a full (bootable!) copy of OS 9 for use in Classic. Jaguar (10.2) and Panther (10.3) do not include OS 9 in the box, but, if you buy a copy of Panther, Apple will offer you an "upgrade" to OS 9.2 for $20 (See the Homepage link for details and upgrade coupon)
I would strongly recommend you buy 10.3 as opposed to 10.1 if you have the choice. Aside from the new features, it's noticeably faster. 10.0 and 10.1 were poorly optimized and still had a lot of debugging code left in.
