I have an imac g3 400 with a 128 & 64 of memory installed. I want to upgrade the memory as i also want to upgrade from OS 9.0.4 to OS X but am confused about what sort of memory to get. I have 64mb PC100-322S and 128mb PC100-222S but the have been recommended 512MB,168-pin DIMM,PC133. Is this right and can I just take out the 64MB and plug a new one in?

Yes, you can take out the 64MB and put a 512MB in, PC100
or PC133 will work.

You can put two 512MB sticks in. This machine will
recognize 1GB of memory.

Before you try installing OS X, update your Firmware. Look
for that here;
