upgrade from 7.6 rto 8.1?

I just found out i didnt need to have os8 , but 7.6 sas sufficient for upgrade to 8.1. Is this true? it would save a lot of trouble... thanx
Summary: to move from 7.6 to 8.x you need to buy mac os 8 then do a clean install of os 8 then if you want go to apple to get the upgrades to 8.1 or 8.5 or 8.6 but you need to buy mac os 8 it is a huge lea...
