Upgrade a PowerBook 1400cs/117

Comment:
I bought an Apple PowerBook 1400cs with 117 MHz not long ago, for little money. And for even lesser money I was offered a PowerBook 1400cs CPU with 166 MHz. As far as I learned from the Apple - History - Homepage, the 117 MHz CPU is the only one without L2-Cache. So the 166 MHz CPU would be much faster. Is it possible to upgrade my existing PowerBook with this CPU or not? Has anybody done that before?

The CPU from the 166 won't work in the 117 due to a ROM bug, IIRC.

Yes, but not worth the $$ IMO, since it's barely a 10% boost.
Best bet if you really want to make your 1400 a decent Mac would be that G3 upgrade from Sonnet.

Well, that's actually a very good idea, where can I get that from? Do you happen to know that? And how expensive it is? I'm sorry for all these simple questions, but I'm a totally newbie when it's 'bout Macintosh, have been using Intel since forever... But thanks so far for your answers. Kept me from buying the CPU

www.sonnettech.com has product info, IIRC. Deal-Mac.com, Pricewatch.com, dealnn.com, and any number of other online resellers might be a good place to get the upgrade.
Expect to pay about $250-300 for the latest superfast one, or somewhat less for a used, slightly slower model.

Thanks a lot for everything, I think I'll purchase an older G3-Update with 233 MHz, I don't need the power of a 466 MHz CPU in a Laptop, primarily used for word processing in University.

Heck, if WP is all you're doing, throw Mac OS 8.1 on there with WordPerfect 3.5e and you'll be set. Won't even need a CPU upgrade.
