Comment: I am trying to get an old iMac into the 21st Century so I may use a Digital camera. I've checked other questions and I see words like "initialize" and "partition" and I get nevous that I am going to lose a bunch of stuff...can you hold my hand in this? I have downloaded the upgrade to 9.0, the upgrade to 9.1 and the upgrade to 9.2...do I need to buy an official "disc"? Thanks for your help! LPL

Reply: (edit)Yes, to legally use OS 9.0 or 9.2, you must buy a licensed copy of it. ----paxcirc.a-

Reply: (edit)When you get said disk, use the 'Clean Install' option, and you won't lose any data. While I am a big fan of BACKING UP any data you are afraid to lose (ANY..DATA you would be crying about later), and initializing before doing a nice clean OS install, I doubt you are going to do that now are you? So do the 'clean install' of whatever OS 9.X you get, and you will find "OLD SYSTEM FOLDER" afterwards. My advice is to forget it's there. Reinstall any apps you have to (you may have to re-enter some serial numbers and such), and after all is working well for a couple weeks then trash that "OLD SYSTEM FOLDER"

Reply: (edit)Wasn't OS9 20th century? My iMac came with 8.6 three years ago (seems longer), and I have paid for all the upgrades since. It has definitely been worth it.

Reply: (edit)Yeah, that IIFX I used to run PShop 2 on was a real screamer in it's day too. I think it ran OS 7.
