Comment:

I have a Mac G4 and a Mac LC 475. I
need to transfer the files from the LC 475
hard drive to the G4, but don't know how
to do it. The LC 475 does not have a
network card or an external modem. Is it
possible to transfer these files?

Get a 10BaseT Ethernet card for the LC from eBay for about $10. It'll be faster and easier than just about any other way.

What are the other ways to do it (for future
reference)?

Buying a SCSI or LocalTalk (replaces the modem) card for the G4 would work. Serial (LocalTalk) is very very slow, and a SCSI card would be a PITA since it's hard to get 50-pin SCSI in a Mac-compatible PCI card any more.

You could also get a modem for the LC,
connect to an FTP site to upload all data,
then download from the g4.
Just get the 10baseT card for ethernet. It's
the best solution.

If you're gonna go the modem route
(thanks, Fieraci - forgot about that), just
use a telephone cord to connect the two
modems together and transfer data using
a terminal emulation program. Lots
easier than finding an FTP server with
that much free space, and it avoids most
of the Internet overhead that would make
the modem connection even slower than
it'll already be :)

To connect the two modems together to
use a terminal emulator wouldn't you
need a NULL MODEM ADAPTER to
bridge the two modems?
I had thought of tacking that one on to my
last suggestion, but to be honest,
TERMINAL EMULATION is not on most
persons "Can Do" list. Not that I wouldn't
consider it, but I, myself have never done
it personally.

Just dial in to one from the other :)

But yeah, not exactly an easy process.
Ethernet is far cheaper if time is worth
anything.

I have the same problem. I need to transfer files from a LC 575 to a imac G3 400. Once the computers are connected, what would the desktop look like? Would I be able to access the LC 575 as if it were an external hard drive?

Not unless you connect them with a method that allows you to use File Sharing (which would mean getting Ethernet for the 575, most likely).

If you do that, just turn on File Sharing on the iMac (it has the faster hard disk) and then use the Chooser to mount the iMac's hard drive on the LC 575's desktop and copy the files over.

Once the ethernet card is plugged in, will I need to install software or drivers to activate ethernet?

Depends on what card and if apples
ethernet driver supports it. Many do. Make
sure you have apples ethernet package
installed and give it a try. If it does not
work then look to the driver that came with
(or downloaded for) the card.
Don't forget to config the appletalk and file
sharing control panels after the card
install, or you may mistakenly think that it
doesn't work.
