transferring files from old to new

Subject: transferring files from old to new
OS: 10.4.6
CPU/Ram: 1.83 Ghz Intel core duo,
Model/Manufacturer: mac
Comment:
I have an old iMac (from around 1999) with a tray for a disc,
running 9.2. It has no firewire port. We tried it with ethernet
crossover cable, but it didn't work. The "help" section tells us
to restart the old mac while pressing down on the "T" key,
and nothing happens, but that directions seems to be about
firewire...going from 9.2 to 10.4.6

Sounds like s/w for ethernet port is not configured
correctly. Filesharing needs to be ON, access via TCP/IP
ON, AppleShare control panel set to Ethernet, TCP/IP
control panel set to DHCP or Static IP via ethernet... and
then you access OS X machine from the Chooser/
AppleShare icon. Good luck, you'll need it.

"pressing down on the "T" key" is only for macs with built-
in Firewire.

To transfer files over, you have to either get ethernet
going (clean install of OS 9.2.2 would be ideal) or get a
USB CD burner and the software (Toast?) to burn the files.

Did nginz get the ethernet connection working? I am about to attempt a similar transfer from a 7220 to a G3 iBook.

Another way to transfer data is to get a USB card for the old mac, and transfer data by memory stick. I am going to attempt this also.
