I have some word files on my old Powerbook170 that I'd like
to transfer to my iBook G4. Any ideas how to do this?!?

How big are the files? Can you e-mail them to yourself?
Have access to another machine with a floppy drive that also
has a cd burner that you can transfer the files to then burn
off? Or ethernet port that can be set up for file sharing with
the iBook?

The files total a couple of megabytes. I don't have access to email on the powerbook, or a computer with floppy/burner.
The file sharing idea sounds like it would work but I'm not familiar with that process. What sort of cable would I need? As far as I understand, powerbooks had ethernet and ibooks have firewire (apologies for my noviceness with all this). Thanks again for the help.

I was referring to file sharing with a machine that you
could get the floppies onto, the 170 doesn't have an
ethernet port (iBooks have both ethernet and firewire).
However, there was/is a SCSI to Ethernet adapter you
could use, but they may be hard to find these days.
Easiest route would be to get/buy an USB floppy drive for
the iBook to transfer the files.Cheapest route would probably be put the files on a
floppy(s), or SCSI Zip drive, then take them to a friend that
has a machine with a floppy drive or Zip drive and have
him copy them to CD or email them. Or if you like, send
the floppies to me and I can burn them. The 170 does have a serial port if you could find a serial
modem.

Dan,
I found some of the SCSI/ethernet adapters on LEM swap
list. It's a Google group you may have to join (it's free) to
see the post. The guy wants $8 each plus shipping. Here's

between the machines. All you need then is a ethernet
cable. If you are running a system earlier than OS 8 on the
170 you may need to establish the connection thru the
Classic mode on the iBook instead of X. If your running 8
or later you should be able to set-up the file sharing via
OS X.
