I have two identical iMac G5, I want to transfer the contents from one to the other. I don't quite know how to proceed. I have bought a 250 GB external USB hard drive.

You could use Migration Assistant to transfer the info, all you need is an ethernet cable.

Or, what I would recommend, use SuperDuper (free version) to do it. Connect the two iMacs together with a firewire cable and restart the the iMac you want to transfer to with the T key held down until you get the firewire symbol (this is known a Target Disk Mode, or TDM). Then use SuperDuper to create a clone of the first iMac to the second.
