i accidently left a powerbook g4 in my girlfriends car over the weekend (which was a very hot and nasty weekend) who brought her 3 and 4 year old kids with her. i recently pulled the 'book out of my car, only to find a partially destroyed screen, toasted cd drive, and a completely dead pc card slot. whenever i turn on the mac, i get the frowny mac... you know, the one with the black background... i need to get stuff off the hard drive ASAP before my boss finds out about his mac... any suggestions? thanks

You might be able to use a firewire
between the two. I know you can do it
with two iMacs. Hook up a firewire to both
computers. Boot the root (Good)
computer up first. When that's done, boot
up the PB and hold down "t" (Target).
What your doing is telling the PB that it's
been targeted by another computer for
access and retrieval. You'll notice an icon
on your desktop of the PB. That is if you
can actually get it to full boot while
holding the "t" down. Make sure you drop
it in the trash and empty it before you stop
this procedure. If you don't, the good
computer will do things you've never seen
before. NOT GOOD.It's actually beyond file sharing but treat it
as such.
TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

If it's not booting, I don't think FireWire Target Disk Mode is going to be any help.
You can probably recover the data by pulling the hard disk, installing it in an external FireWire case, and hooking it up to another Mac.
The LCD is probably toast. The rest of it *might* be salvageable.

okay. i pulled the hard drive out and stuck it in a *very* homeless makeshift firewire box. i started to move files from one drive to my iMac when the power went out due to a SURGE... now my iMac wont start up.
im screwed... thanks anyway.

note: i actually thought of that firewire idea and started on it before i checked up here... UGH - thanks tho

I hope your girlfriend offerred to replace
what her children had destroyed. If,
not........well, what does that tell you?

I sort of fail to see how this is the girlfriend's (or her children's) fault, since the poster is the moron who left it in a 200° car over an entire weekend...
p

For real, how the hell do you leave an ultra
$$$$ powerbook g4 in an unatended car
over the week-end,hell most people I
know don't even leave their radio's in the
car.
