Comment:

I can no longer initiate a Telnet session with my web host. I get, "An error ocurred while attempting to open the Mac TCP driver. Internal error #300, Mac OS error#-23." using MacTelnet I get, "Sorry, MacTelnet cannot run because it was unable to start up the TCP driver."

These are the circumstances:
- Mac OS 9.1 (This problem did not occur when I was using 8.1. Maybe I threw out a necessary extension?)
- AOL 5.0
- TCP/IP AOL Link Enhanced, BootP Server
- Telenet 2.6
- MacTelnet 3.0

All insights are welcome.

Make sure anything having to do with Open Transport is checked in the Extensions Manager.

Thanks for helping, P.

My extensions manager includes the
following, which are all checked:
- Open Transport
- Open Tpt ASLM Modules
- Open Tpt Remote Access
- Open Trp Serial Arbitration

Should there be others?

Hrmmm...

Try doing a custom install of just the Networking stuff from the 9.x CD.

Well, I've done that and still cannot Telnet!

Do you think I need to do something
different with the TCP/IP control pannel
settings?

What's it set to now?

Do any other TCP/IP-based apps work (WWW browser, e-mail, etc.)?

Thanks for continuing to follow this
mystery, P.

I use TCP/IP for AOL access (email) and
IE browsing. It's set at AOL Link
Enhanced and BootP Browser and works
well in those apps.

This, Telnet, is the only one where I've
had trouble, although a couple of years
ago it worked well. Unfortunately I don't
recall all the changes since then. The
priamary one is probably OS8.1=>9.1 and
I'm really reluctant to go back to the older
system!

My guess - and this is a guess, because I don't know how AOL does things with TCP/IP connections - is that perhaps the telnet client doesn't know what to do with that proprietary AOL PPP connection.
