Startup Disk Questions

I have partitioned a new drive for my SE/30 in to two volumes (see earlier post). It is an 350MB hard drive. On one drive I put 7.5.5 and on the other has 6.0.8.

My problem is the Startup Disk control panel does not let me change the startup disk. When I open the SD control panel. Both drives are selected. If I choose a different volume, it ingores it and restarts from the current volume anyway. The only way I can change startup volumes is to unbless the current System folder and bless the system folder in the other volume I want. Is there anyway around this? Is it a problem with my disk driver software? Is there no support for volumes in 6.0.8? Or is it a limitation of my SE/30 or the 68030 processor?

Any suggestions?

The startup disk control panel will not allow you to boot from a lower system in 7.5.5

Any particular reason you want to keep such an old OS if you have 7.5.5?

There are lots of reasons to keep around 6.0.8, particularly on an SE/30. The most obvious one is that there are a good deal of programs that don't work with MultiFinder, and thus don't work with System 7 or newer, where there is no traditional Finder option. Some of those programs can be tricked into working by killing the Finder manually, but it's generally easier to just use System 6. There are also programs that simply refuse to run under newer systems. In short: newer != better.

In terms of switching back and forth between folder, there is no particularly good solution. There are some utilities available that allow you to bless folders, but I can't think of any off the top of my head that work under system 6. On the system 7 side you could write an AppleScript to do the necessary file-moving and the like to make the Finder bless a system folder. If you have a compiler you could probably write something to do this in 6, but I'm not sure if you'll trigger the Finder's blessing mechanism if you move files outside the Finder.
