I don't have a MAC at all, but I've heard the Mac chime on a friend's mac, and I think it's cooler than the XP startup "chime." So, is there any site I can download the Mac chime in the WAVE format, so that my PC plays it when it first starts?

Insect,
Unfortunately - no.
With both Apple Mac and Windows PC, you would
find that even if you started the computer up
without a hard drive in it - it would still "chime"
(even though it would go completely dead after
that). This means that the start-up chime is integrated
into the logic board itself! For years - Mac users have wanted to create other
start-up chimes - for example - the first couple of
bars of Beethoven's 9th - and come to a dead loss
on how to do it (as the sound does not exist
anywhere on the HD).Around 4 or 5 years ago someone - some genuis
in the UK, found a way of over-riding the logic
board's firmware and having all kinds of sounds
bleeting out upon startup. He advertised his
discovery on the internet and then found himself
up against Apple's lawyers for copyright
infringement on the "removal" of the aural
hallmark of Apple! One could very well find a WAV of anyone of
Apple's 10 variations of the start-up chime -
though I hugely suspect that you would still be
hearing your XP Chime "before" you heard
Apple's when you booted up.If I'm wrong - tell me - and I'll track down a WAV
site for you. (Try it with just any old WAV file first
though and see if it over-rides XP's chime).cheers

I don't know XP but on NT you can edit system sounds with Control Panel, Sounds. "Start Windows" is included in the list.

William is right, in Windows, it's really easy to change the startup sound, because unlike a Mac, the start sound on a PC is actually on the hard drive, so it's easily modified. I once had Homer Simpson say DOH! on startup instead of the normal Windows chime. So I'm ready for the wav Mac Chimes.
Thanks for all the help, clockwork! Really appreciate it!

Okli-dokli - out of the 20 or so Mac Chimes - which

- and I'll send it to you direct - got an e-mail or

My friends Mac is a Power Macintosh G4/450 Dual Processor, and it runs OS 9.2
If needed, more info can be found at http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/stats/powermac_g4_450_dp.htmlIt would be easiest if the sound format was WAV.
Thanks for all of your help and time finding these sounds! I've always wanted my PC to sound at least a little like one of those Macs. (which I've always secretly admired!)

Sorry I didn't mention this last post, but I've typed in my e-mail address this time, so giving my name a click should get you to it.

Bon Insect,
I have sent you 4 files - 2 exe - and 2 zip (just in
case - if you can't open them - just e-mail me back
- I am far far from PC savvy) - no need to freak
over viruses - Macs don't really ever get them -
we're unloved by hate-mail :'(Both chimes are in .WAV format - at 22.255 kHz -
16 bit stereo.Just e-mail me back if you need any of these
settings altered.have fun
=)
cheers
