My trusted Mac IIci is about to go into retirement, having made way for a new iMac.

I need to transfer all my precious software, including Quark Express and Photoshop, from the IIci to the iMac, but the IIci only has a 3.5” floppy drive. How can I download the old software and get it onto the new kid on the block?

I bought myself a Traxdata CDRW drive and connected it to the SCSI interface of the IIci so but the IIci just refuses to acknowledge its existence. What can I do and how do I do it?

Listen pal, your new iMac will probably be choking on your 'precious' software that is made to run on your 2ci. The hardware differences are so great that you should really make the effort to at least get the powerPC installers for your 'precious' software (it makes a big difference). You can't fight the future.
All that said, if you want to transfer your DATA from the 2ci to the new iron then you should get the proper DRIVER (extension) for the CDRW drive (should have shipped with the drive) and load it on the 2ci. Then it will most likely work (don't forget to set a unique SCSI id, and be sure it's terminated. Then you must have the software to write CDR's (should have shipped with the drive). And...WHY did you go out and buy a SCSI CDRW drive for an old dog like your 2ci when you are sporting a new iMac? PLEASE: Leave SCSI beind! It's not as if you even have a POWER MAC with SCSI. It's a damned 2ci for chrissakes. Just LET GO. Don't waste your time or money on anything for the 2ci unless it's real cheap. Better yet: Give the damned thing to your niece or nephew.

If you want to be a sport and spend a tiny bit of dough then get an ethernet card for the 2ci and you can transfer data back and forth all day long if you want to via ethernet. I have 4 Macs and a printer hooked up this way (G4-450, powerbook3400-240, Q605, Q650,epson850). The Quadras are just toys now but they serve small purposes just the same.

Take it from a guy who has been there and back.

I have a similar problem, I recently obtained a IIci and I need to get the data trandfered off before it crashes, since it is no longer supported. Any suggestions on doing this? Can I stor the data on a IBM temporarily? I have a scsi CRW also. I wish I could network it.

If you want to spend less money, get a cheap modem for your ci- the neices and nephews, or better yet, grandpa, will appreciate it when you pass it on- then sign up for a free drive space on line and transfer copies of your ci up there. There can't be that much on a ci, just take pieces. Then download to imac. There you are, that's what I did.
