Slow Printing from OS X to H.P.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any fixes for slow printing from OS X machines printing to H.P. Laserjet printers 4SI/MX and 8100N. Protocol used is Appletalk. Print job seems to sit in print manager under specified printers queue and shows processing... for a couple of minutes or so (even a single page spreadsheet or email). Using OS X Jaguar with updates from software update installed. Any suggestions for speeding up printing would be greatly appreciated.

We can't use I.P. printing for our client computers due to some automated reporting functions from an Alpha Server on our network that disables I.P. printing during it's print jobs. I don't know why, but was told by someone at my office that I need to use a protocol other than TCP/IP. Could using AppleTalk slow the print queue?

AppleTalk is probably the source of the slowness, yes. Can't your IT guys fix the IP printing problem? What the heck do the Windoze boxes use to print?
