I'm going to college next year to study computer science and i'm gonna need a laptop and i've been thinking about getting and ibook or a powerbook and i was wondering what are the advantages of switching to OSX and The mac?
Or indeed what are the disadvantages?
I have some specific questions also, is it possible to do all the same programming etc. on a mac as it is on a PC (eg. c++ etc.)? do the same kind of programming languages work on both? how much does Move2mac and microsoft office for mac cost?
Any help you can give me is much appreciated!

I would contact the college, and ask the computer science department for what type of computer to get. Another thing to consider is the Apple student discount. Similar student discounts are offered by many of the name brand pc manufacturers. Microsoft offers educational versions of its software at the campus computer store at very discounted prices.

YES, come over to the light side my friend. macs are so
much simpler and never have to worry about pitty viruses
or ad ware bs. ive been a mac user my whole life and will
never ever think about buying a pc. macs maybe more
expensive yes but what your payin for is some quality
built stuff man. sure macs may not have the software
market that windows does but i have never been hand a
time where i couldnt find a application for my needs on
my mac. i highly suggest lookin into buying a mac. i
think you will be very satisfied. funny how ive never seen
any mac users switch to pc but i see many now coming
over to macs :D

Virtual PC is kinda pricey but worth it if you are a pc dependent who wants to switch to mac. I am a 3 year long mac guy and one for life now. I don't know if Virtual PC will let you run ALL pc only programs, but if you call the apple store, they will tell you all about that.

come over, you will be happier here, i am...

oh and the no viruses thing, i read an article recently that stated the popularity of tiger will surely bring hackers into our world.

yes, i highly recomend switching to mac, i am a 2 year mac guy & one for life myself & i will never switch back. However, if you are going to be programming, you might want to ask what the possibilities are on a mac, i however do recomend switching in all other catagories. I believe you will be satisfied in the software market as well. Good Luck with your decision!
