Comment:

Just bought a second hand G4 and am having problems with the screen resolution. It's running os 9.2 and has an ATI Rage 128 card in it - the screen res will not change from 640x480, and the "Monitor & Sound" control panel crashes the computer everytime I select it.

At first I thought it could be the monitor since it's an old old apple generic number, but have put on my newer monitor and it's just the same.

Have run nortons through it which picked up a lot of errors since the guy I bought it off deleted a whole bunch of stuff - all to no avail. And since I'm not a tech wiz I'm stumped.

Any ideas gratefully received!

It is not your monitor, more the graphics card. Try reinstalling the OS, or try updating from the apple menu.

Additionally, ditch Norton, it will cause more problems than it is worth. Intead run disk utility and repair permissions. Then do a repair disk. Disk utility should be in your apps folder - maybe under utilities.
