saving other than image files?

Is there a way to save and also retrieve files from a CF card that are other than image files (for instance .sit files)? So far I haven't been able to do that or rather figure out how to. This works with my PC (I have a Lexmark with a cardreader on it, but the lexmark doesn't work with my Mac (0s9.22). I also haven't been able to get the Mac to recognize my camera on it. I am in the process of trying to find something other than the the software that came with the camera (HP 318) which is limited on os 9.22.
