safari crashing

every time i try to run safari, it opens, then "unexpectedly quits". nothing else is effected but this application. this all started about a week ago - my computer crashed, and when it restarted, the date was wrong - my computer was saying the date was dec 31, 1969.
i was able to fix that, but ever since I havent been able to get safari to work - I have tried reinstalling but nothing is working - any ideas?
