Part #1
I recently bought a PowerMac 8100/80 from my place of work. The Mac had no hard drive, so I took the drive from my PowerMac 6100/60, and put it in the 8100. I reformatted the LaCie hard drive with Apple's Drive Setup v1.7.3, and installed MacOS 8.5. Shortly after installing the OS, the Mac locked up,
and when I restarted it, I got a, "Sad Mac" with error code 00000000f 000000056 (the number of zero's may be wrong). I zapped the PRAMS, and did every other thing that I could think of, but could not shake the Sad Mac. I took the hard drive out of the 8100, and the computer started fine! I tried putting the hard drive back into the 6100, and got the same Sad Mac error.

Part #2
After having the above trouble, and thinking that the hard drive failed, I bought a new APS 4GB hard drive for the 8100. I installed the hard drive in the 8100, and reformatted the drive with Apple's Drive Setup (Maybe I should not have done this?). I restarted the 8100, and installed MacOS 8.5, but screwed up the install by installing too many omponents, so I again reformatted the drive with Drive Setup. I restarted the 8100, and guess what... I got another Sad Mac, but this time with a different error code. This time I got 00000000f 00000000c (again, the number of zero's may be wrong).

Any idea what I can do, or what I should try next? do you know what the error codes are?

Ron, your situation intrigues me, I believe that the harddrives put in the 8100's and 6100's are all helically-sychronized, and formatting them with anything newer than Drive Set-up version 1.2 causes miss alignment of the drive. Try using an older version of Disk Set-up! I've also found that sacrificing a young goat on the first Friday of the month helps!

I've recently installed two second hand hard drives on an old '040'mac with OS 8.0. I discovered a similar problem. It may be that the drives have not been partitioned correctly with the latest drivers installed? Of course, OS 8.5 also formats drives diferently, so that file sizes less than 36K (?) can be accomodated, this may be the problem.

Ron, it's possible that you do not have a driver problem at all. Sometimes directory corruptions can cause wierd problems, too. Try running an app like Disk Warrior to rebuild the directories from an external source (e.g. external HD or bootable CD) I have had a lot of directory problems with OS 8.5, so it is possible that this is a bug that was missed before release.
