My iMac has a bad A/V board and power
supply (the screen remains black on
startup). I am not looking to repair it but
would like to retrieve the data on the hard
drive. How can this be accomplished?

Is it possible to set up an AppleTalk
network even though it will not fully start
up?

Just take out the old hard drive and put it in another
Mac. I have a hard drive from an old IBM-compatible
from 95 in my G4 Powermac.

or if you don't have room for another hard drive in a
different mac, consider buying an external usb or
firewire hard drive enclosure to hook it up to the
other mac.... they are handy to have around anyway

External USB enclosure: bad idea unless you don't have any other options. USB hard drives are wicked slow.
