Comment: Hi, I am looking to replace my internal CD reader with a CD-RW. I could buy an external USB but besides being slower, my computer area is already cluttered and I am out of plugs (iMac, printer, ADSL, router, firewall, speakers, etc). I have replaced my hard drive and added memory, so opening the box and changing stuff does not bother me. What worries me is buying something, going to all the trouble, and then it not working. I have a revision D (333 - tray loading) iMac, and from the looks of it, the CD reader is a laptop type (slim and power from the interface). Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Reply: (edit)...and that's precisely why it's going to be virtually impossible to do it, because no one even makes replacement drives other than Apple, and they don't offer a CD-RW version. p

Reply: (edit)As far as being 'out of plugs': Get a USB hub (they're cheap), and you'll be all set for more USB devices. USB can 'allegedly' handle something like 100+ devices on one chain I think.

Reply: (edit)Do you have a firewire plug on your imac,if so you can always buy a firewire cd-rw,they do tend to be a little faster!

Reply: (edit)Ahhh, , , excuse me, but I just purchased a new 700 graphite CD-RW. For some reason it would vibrate when it spun up. A tech was dispatched to my house, he replaced the entire drive in about 25 minutes. You can purchase them. But what about other hardware for the RW. Is there anything else other than the drive??? I don't know. TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

Reply: (edit)The CD-RWs are a slot-loading full-size IDE drive. The older trayloaders are not. There's a huge difference. Was the tech an official Apple guy? p

Reply: (edit)To recall the entire conversation with him, let me clarify. I ask him why the new iMac went back to the "cup-Holder". The only answer he had was cost efficiency. The slot loaders tended to cost more to make then the tray. He also mentioned that he loved it. Better for business. . . HIS, LOL. The trays seemed to fail alot sooner than the slots. Then we strayed into a conversation about interchanging the new slots to the older Macs. Believe it or not folks, Apple is doing it. It can be done, for a price. Why someone would do it is beyond me. He said for about $275.00 no prob (soldering iron in hand). You people don't think that apple just threw away all their unused trays when they went to slot do you? And yes he is a Certified Apple Tech. The equivalent of a Teir 2. TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

Reply: (edit)You can't purchase them on the open market, at least not easily. Sure, you can get replacement parts from an Apple dealer, but (begin rhetorical question) why would you want to when the damn slot-loading ones are $100 brand-new, retail? Unfortunately, they don't fit, so a dead CD-ROM drive in a tray-loading iMac will basically send the machine to the scrap heap. Replacing the drive costs as much as the iMac is worth. p

Reply: (edit)For all you cynics out there, you can actually replace a tray-loading cd-rom drive with a cd-rw drive. MCE makes and ships them-- as of July 1, 2002. More info at: http://store.powerbook1.com/ mcein16xcddr.html Replacing the drive should be no problem if you've replace the hard drive--it's only a couple of steps to replace the cd-rom drive. They run a bit on the pricey side--$200, but I'm sure they're well worth it. I have an external usb connected cd-rw. Not only can you NOT run it through a hub (must be directly connected) it is very sporadic. I've only managed to successfully burn a few cds. I'm looking to replace my cd rom drive with an internal cd-rw also. Good luck!

Reply: (edit)I stupidly got a mini-CD disk-ette jamed in my iMac internal CD and try as it may my Imac can't spit out the little bugger. It remains locked in my machine so I can't run any CD's. I have tried the paper clip in the hole number and the machine whirrs but won't spit out the little CD. Should I have a tec get it out or could I buy an external CD drive for my IMac? Thanks... any help would be appreciated by this novice user Gordon A

Reply: (edit)1) $200 is nearly the replacement cost of a first-generation iMac now. 2) The slot-loading iMacs must be taken to an Apple Service Center if you put a mini-CD in the drive. p
