I have an iMac DV Special Edition 400MHz /128mb /13G /4xDVD /56K /Graphite computer that was purchased exactly 3 years ago yesterday. For the last few months we have had the problem after a power failure of the date and time changing to a period when the Wright brothers and Kitty Hawk, N.C. were making headlines. 1/1/04 to be exact. I now know that the battery needs to be replaced. We have a book by IDG books called "My iMac" that decribes taking off the back cover by removing one screw and pulling on the handle. My iMac has no such screw and handle and when I removed the screws that I did find and started wiggling, the front seemed to hang up around the speakers and the DVD slot. I got nervous and put it back together.
Is replacing the battery in this computer something that I should attempt, or should I load it in the car and head to the shop?
Also, should the battery be bad after such a short period of time?
