Replacing a hard drive is quite simple. Apple's technical support site, and your manual that came with the computer, give instructions on how to do it. Most hard drives made today for the personal market are ATA drives. And, most of those will work fine with an ATA66 controller. The cost is however much you want to spend on a drive. Drives in the single GB range will be incredibly cheap, while drives up to 200 or so GB will be about ... 300 dollars.

Thank you so much for your advice. I do find it weird that my hard drive, ata-66 10 gig had a mechanical failure, a head crash told by my repair man. It has been in use for 2 1/2 years. I didn't move it while it crashed. What do you think the reason was?
